What is Apecoin (APE)?
Apecoin is the token of the Apecoin DAO that governs the APE ecosystem. Furthermore, it helps power the community building out said ecosystem.
What is Apecoin?
Apecoin, or APE (its token symbol) is an ERC-20 token powering the APE ecosystem. Holders of the otken are able to help make ecosystem decisions such as fund designation, changes or additions in rules, etc.
Currently, this asset is on the Ethereum blockchain, and will remain so for the foreseeable future, after the Apecoin community voted in favor of remaining earlier in 2022.
What does Apecoin do?
Because it is the utility and governance token of the APE ecosystem, Apecoin not only has functions as accepted payment for ecosystem services and DAO participation, projects that build within the ecosystem can also use it within their own incentive systems. For instance, if a game builds within the ecosystem, it can accept Apecoin as payment for in-game skins/objects.
The APE Ecosystem
Essentially, the APE Ecosystem, which was born out of Bored Ape Yacht Club’s (BAYC) success, is made up of token holders and the apps and developers that utilize the token. Now of course, Yuga Labs, the creators of BAYC, is the most prominent member of the ecosystem. And as it is a member, it has adopted Apecoin as its primary token, holding roughly 16% of the token’s 1,000,000,000APE supply (6.25% is being donated to charity, according to the Apecoin website. Like the other members of the ecosystem, Yuga Labs is tasked with developing its products.
Other members include BAYC and MAYC (Mutant Ape Yacht Club) NFT holders, other companies and individuals that actively contributed to the ecosystem’s creation, and the individual founders of BAYC.
Besides BAYC, another prominent project in the ecosystem is the Otherside metaverse, developed by Yuga Labs, Improbable and Animoca Brands. Otherside, like other metaverse project Decentraland, will be a platform on which developers can create various games and experiences. Furthermore, Otherside features virtual land, with each plot of land having its own unique attributes.
Apecoin DAO
The Apecoin DAO, the project’s decentralized autonomous organization, exists to make various ecosystem decisions on fund allocation, governance rules, projects and partnerships, among other responsibilities. As mentioned before, APE token holders are eligible to be DAO members, and are thus able to vote on proposals.
Like any other DAO, there is a proposal process in order to make changes to the ecosystem. Any proposal must be submitted via an AIP, or Ape Improvement Proposal and must follow proposal guidelines as outlined on the governance page of the website.
The APE Foundation
This is the legal entity that serves to oversee and apply the DAO’s decisions. It is run by an administrative board, made up of proven crypto investors and builders. The foundation is indeed separate from Ape DAO, and runs its day-to-day operations such as project management and bookkeeping.

The APE Foundation
The APE Foundation is the steward of ApeCoin. It is not an overseer, but the base layer on which ApeCoin holders in the ApeCoin DAO can build.
The Foundation facilitates decentralized and community-led governance and is designed to become more decentralized over time. It is tasked with administering the decisions of the ApeCoin DAO, and is responsible for day-to-day administration, bookkeeping, project management, and other tasks that ensure the DAO community’s ideas have the support they need to become a reality.
The goal of the APE Foundation is to steward the growth and development of the APE ecosystem in a fair and inclusive way. It utilizes the Ecosystem Fund, which is controlled by a multisig wallet, to pay its expenses as directed by the ApeCoin DAO and provides an infrastructure for ApeCoin holders to collaborate through open and permissionless governance processes.
The DAO
ApeCoin DAO exists because decentralized governance is critical to building and managing a globally dispersed community—and therefore critical to the success of the APE ecosystem.
The APE Improvement Proposal Process (see Governance) will allow ApeCoin DAO members to make decisions regarding Ecosystem Fund allocations, governance rules, projects, partnerships, and beyond. ApeCoin DAO membership is open to all ApeCoin holders.
The Board
The Special Council of the APE Foundation provides, at the behest of the ApeCoin DAO members, stewardship and oversight of the APE Foundation. The Special Council members exist to serve the vision of ApeCoin DAO.
It does this by the following, though they are not limited to the items listed below:
- Conducting detailed administrative reviews of AIPs according to the process outlined in AIP-1
- Ensuring the implementation of the ApeCoin DAO’s intentions and wishes as manifested through approved AIPs
- Safeguarding and stewarding the ApeCoin DAO treasury
- Serving as primary community liaisons with the APE Foundation and its service providers in Cayman Islands, facilitating open and effective communication channels
- Overseeing the Ape Foundation administrators and other foundation service providers, ensuring they execute their duties with efficiency and timeliness, aligned with the ApeCoin DAO's objectives and values.
ApeCoin Protocol
ApeCoin is an ERC-20 governance and utility token used within the APE ecosystem to empower a decentralized community building at the forefront of web3.
As the open-source protocol layer of the ecosystem, ApeCoin serves several purposes:

ApeCoin Allocation
The total supply of ApeCoin is permanently fixed at 1 billion tokens. No minting capability is exposed through the contract interface, thus the total supply will never increase. Similarly, the contract interface does not expose any token burning capability, so the total supply will never decrease.
In line with the standard practice, a portion of the tokens for contributors to the project will be initially locked. Locked tokens will be unlocked over a period of 48 months, in accordance with the predetermined unlock schedule in the chart below, starting on launch day, March 17, 2022.

До сих пор не раскрыты имена Tomato Ketchup и No Sass. Их пригласили в проект последними, в качестве разработчиков, а позже сделали соучредителями.

Что такое метавселенная Otherside?
В марте 2022 года Yuga Labs анонсировала метавселенную, названную Otherside, и выпустила нативный токен своей экосистемы под названием ApeCoin (APE). Тогда же разработчики представили тизер проекта.

В начале мая 2022-го ДАО ApeCoin одобрило сразу три предложения.
Сооснователь Dogecoin Билли Маркус раскритиковал создателей экосистемы APE. По его словам, такие токены быстро набирают популярность, но и так же быстро дешевеют, что вызывает неправильные ассоциации.
«Извините, я не фанат ApeCoin, в основном потому, что я считаю, это вредит NFT-сегменту. Сообщества токенов, как правило, гипертоксичны и безрассудны», — написал он.
Какие еще NFT-коллекции входят в экосистему APE?
Помимо BAYC, Yuga Labs выпустила еще две коллекции невзаимозаменяемых токенов:
