What is "Unstoppable Domains"?
Unstoppable Domains is a San Francisco-based company providing domain name extensions that are tied to a blockchain rather than to the traditional Domain Name System (DNS). Specifically, Unstoppable Domains manages .crypto, .coin, .wallet, and a number of other extensions tied to the Ethereum blockchain and Polygon blockchains. This means you can create and own, for example, brad.crypto or brad.wallet and that those domain names will be registered on public blockchains rather than in the private databases of traditional domain name registry services.
What are the advantages of domain names that live on public blockchains?
The advantages derive from the fact that blockchains are decentralized. This has a number of implications.
First, when you buy, for example, brad.crypto, you own it forever. That's because what you're actually buying is a non-fungible token (NFT) that lives on the Ethereum or Polygon blockchain. By contrast, if you buy brad.com, you're leasing access to the name from an organization called Verisign that manages lists of domain names and houses them on servers it controls. Например, киевский разработчик Богдан Гусев стал сооснователем и техническим директором компании, Катерина Фуртак – операционным директором.
В 2021 году проект Unstoppable Domains вошел в тридцатку лучших украинских стартапов по версии Forbes. Тогда издание оценило молодую компанию с командой из 80 человек в $30 млн, сейчас эта оценка выросла еще больше.
Редакция MC.today поговорила с операционным директором компании Катериной Фуртак и узнала, как блокчейн-стартап с американскими корнями успешно растет с офисом в Украине.
Почему американские предприниматели открыли офис в Киеве
Проект Unstoppable Domains стартовал в конце 2018 года. Его основали три американца и украинец – Брэд Кэм, Мэтт Гулд, Брэйден Печерски и Богдан Гусев.

Мэтт и Брэд были уже давно знакомы по совместным проектам. С Брэйденом они познакомились в школе для айтишников schools 42. Там они стали работать с доменами Ethereum Name Service, площадкой для продажи доменных имен в системе блокчейн. Вскоре они поняли, что могут создать собственную компанию. «Киев — город стартапов, и это очень круто. Нужно сказать, я совсем не так представлял Украину, когда впервые сюда ехал. Но сейчас, когда друзья спрашивают про Киев, я рассказываю, что это классный и причудливый город, в котором есть все то же, что и в других европейских городах, и что здесь живут супермилые люди», – рассказал MC.today Брэд Кэм.
Катерина Фуртак тоже стала украинским членом команды и начала работать на должности операционного директора.
Что такое Unstoppable Domains и чем конкретно занимается стартап
Чтобы хранить, переводить и получать криптовалюту, нужны кошельки – это как банковский счет. Для каждой валюты он должен быть собственным – если продолжить аналогию с банком, это как долларовая и гривневая карты и их номера.
«Разница в том, что адрес криптокошелька состоит из случайных 30+ знаков. Используются цифры, символы, буквы в большом и маленьком регистре – при наборе адреса легко ошибиться и отправить деньги в неизвестность. Все, что происходит в блокчейне, анонимно и одноразово, отменить ничего нельзя. Номер карты реально запомнить, если ошибся – связаться с банком, сделать возврат, тут – нельзя», – рассказывает Катерина.
По ее словам, сейчас в мире активно используют более 200 криптовалют. Зарегистрировано их намного больше. Для операций в каждой из них человеку нужен отдельный кошелек – то есть отдельные 30 символов. Запомнить это невозможно, а вот потерять или ошибиться в номерах – легко.
Стартап Unstoppable Domains решает эту проблему. С его помощью можно купить понятный и короткий домен, например Natali.crypto. К нему можно привязать адреса криптокошельков в любой валюте и в любом количестве. И, когда человек захочет отправить владельцу домена любую криптовалюту, вместо 30 символов ему достаточно ввести только понятное доменное имя. Крипта придет в той же валюте, которую шлет отправитель. Если говорить совсем простым языком, домен Unstoppable Domains – это единая карточка для всех банков и валют.

Сколько стоят домены и какие из них нельзя купить за деньги

Повезло, что таких было немного, мы еще не были слишком известными. Для нас это был, наверное, самый важный урок», – рассказывает Катерина.

Когда Unstoppable Domains запускали следующую зону – .crypto, они сразу зарезервировали домены всех торговых марок и не стали выставлять их в свободный доступ. Получить такой может только компания, которая владеет ТМ, причем бесплатно.
Цена домена в свободной продаже зависит от его содержания – примерно как номера для автомобиля. Чем короче домен, тем он дороже. Самый дешевый адрес в зоне .zil сейчас можно купить за $20. Самый дорогой домен – win.crypto – Unstoppable Domains продали в марте этого года за $100 тыс. Сейчас у стартапа есть десять доменных зон, среди них, например, .nft, .dao, .wallet.
«Обычно мы анонсируем продажу какого-то особенно дорогого и желанного домена. В это время растут продажи и всех остальных категорий», – рассказывает Катерина.
Спустя 2,5 года после запуска Unstoppable Domains продали 1,2 млн доменов.
Зачем Unstoppable Domains инвестирует в криптосообщество и на что тратит деньги
Первые инвестиции в Unstoppable Domains сделали основатели – они вложили личные накопления. Остальное – инвестиции, почти сразу компания получила грант от Zilliqa Foundation на $250 тыс., потом еще $4 млн от Draper Associates и Boost VC.
Самые большие расходы компании делятся на две части. Первая – команда, вторая – развитие интернет-сообщества.

«Первые два года мы даже не давали платной рекламы, начали с ней работать только в этом году. Вместо этого на протяжении двух лет сотрудники делали обучающие видео, отвечали на вопросы пользователей, вовлекались во всякие беседы, проводили соревнования, игры, разыгрывали бесплатные домены», – рассказывает Катерина.
По ее словам, на обучение этому уходило немало времени – сотрудников готовили, чтобы они могли отвечать на вопросы пользователей и обучать их новым технологиям. Также компания начала работу с экспертами, которые рассказывали о стартапе в Twitter и на YouTube.
«У нас все это время работает забавная игрушка Animal Domains. Это игра – ты можешь получить бесплатно домен с названием животного и прилагательным, к нему прилагается авторская картинка, которую нужно создать самостоятельно. В итоге получаются очень смешные домены – даже у меня такой есть в зоне wisehyena.crypto», – рассказывает Катерина.
Сообщество стартапа в Telegram уже набрало около 10 тысяч подписчиков, в Twitter – 200 тысяч. Катерина считает, что именно это сообщество и активное общение сотрудников в соцсетях больше всего помогает развитию Unstoppable Domains – потому что это наиболее простой и доступный способ рассказать людям о возможностях домена на блокчейне и криптовалюте в целом.
С какими проблемами сталкивается блокчейн-стартап
Катерина рассказывает, что некоторые проблемы возникают по независящим от Unstoppable Domains причинам. Например, из-за постоянного роста популярности блокчейна сильно выросла цена транзакции. Речь идет не только о переводах: например, присоединить адрес криптокошелька – это тоже транзакция.
